Joshua Nzyoka's Bio         Birthdate: 12 August, 2004 (estimated)

Joshua, believed to be around three years of age, was found wandering on the streets on 7 Feb, 2008. He was taken to Nairobi rescue center home by District Officer Kasarani.

Joshua became the first baby boy of Through the Storm International’s home, Haven on the Hill, on 16 Jun, 2008. We gave him the last name Nzyoka after the welfare officer who gave us permission to take Joshua home and start caring for him.

Joshua’s condition was bad. He had sores all over his tiny body and a bad case of diarrhea. He was very unemotional-no crying, laughing or talking. At first I thought he was deaf. In the middle of the night I changed his diaper and he had a lot of blood in it. Plans for the next day changed and we took him to Nairobi Gertrude’s children’s hospital where they said he had a “rota” virus. They gave us medication for him and in a few days he was doing much better. After he knew he was safe, Joshua started being quite a character. He started playing with me, acting as if he were sleeping. He would snore, then open his eyes and look at me and we would both start laughing. He changed right in front of our eyes. It was very hard on both of us for me (Janice) to leave.

Feb, 2009: Trena says "Joshua is doing so much better. He is the one who had the hardest time adjusting to his life changes a few months ago. Now he is the little laughing boy! He pretends to be shy and serious, but once he is comfortable, he loves to laugh and joke."

Oct, 2009: Auntie Naomi says "He is always the last one to sleep and always the first one to wake up. He can't allow others to sleep after he has awakened. His first job when he wakes up is to call the names of the other boys starting with his best friend James...He always makes sure that James is okay and likes sharing with him and helps him get his slippers from under the chairs...He is the shyest boy, especially when he is in a new environment. Also, he is the most emotional..."

Oct, 2009: Phil says "When I show up in the door of the house Joshua looks up, his eyes get big and he runs to me with his arms open. He knows that I will pick him up, hug him, tell him I love him and lift him up to touch the ceiling. I believe this is the highlight of both our days. Joshua is a most handsome boy! Our language barrier keeps me from understanding a lot of what's on his mind but I can tell that he trusts me, even though I am not around most of the time. Who knows what his little eyes have witnessed before he came to our home but God is able to erase or heal the memories. He loves to climb and is not afraid of heights. He is growing-stretching out-fast."

May, 2011: Phil says "Joshua has grown to be such a tall, handsome boy! During our last trip Janice presented Joshua with a toy truck as a reward for beginning to do well in school. Previously, he was a little behind but praise God he is the head and not the tail!"
