Kelvin's Bio     Birthdate: 18 July, 2002 (estimated)

Kelvin Waithaka Nwgure, age five, was taken out of the Kayole slums by a Muranga police officer. Kelvin was neglected and hungry with no hope for any future. He was placed in the already crowded Muranga rescue center on 29 May, 2008.
 
Kelvin became our fourth boy at Haven on the Hill on 19 June, 2008.  Kelvin was excited about going to school. He wants to become a doctor. He has a beautiful smile that I saw for the first time when I gave him a Hot Wheel™ car. We became friends and he knew that he was safe. He was so happy to have a bed with a pillow and blanket. Kelvin's older brother John is also our child.

Feb, 2009: Trena says "Kevin - the boy with the amazing smile! He has come completely out of his shell. There is no more shy kid here....100% BOY! He likes to play rough and loves football (soccer). He speaks great English, too!"

Oct, 2009: Auntie Naomi says "Kelvin is very proud to be the oldest...When he puts his mind to it he is the hardest working boy in the house. He loves to be appreciated, praised and noticed...He has an amazing memory, especially in Bible study! He loves story telling and listening to stories."

Oct, 2009: Phil says "Kelvin is in many ways a typical eight year old boy. He is a dreamer, especially a daydreamer. He is very bright and attentive yet his focus drifts at times. Being the oldest of the six boys, he is tasked with many chores and helps take care of his younger brothers. He is always working on something, whether it is his chores, homework or building with the Leggos or coloring pictures. In other ways, Kelvin is NOT a typical eight year old boy. He and his brother John were well into school age when they were relocated from their home for whatever reason. Later, John died unexpectedly and Kelvin was suddenly the oldest brother at Haven. I couldn't imagine going through what Kelvin must have gone through. BUT GOD IS FAITHFUL. Kelvin loves to go on adventures. I took him and Hezekiel down to the lower Shamba (farm) to the river (small stream at the bottom of the steep hill) and he noticed everything about the terrain and landscape. Later, in our own one on one time, Kelvin and I walked the three miles to the newly opened tea processing factory. He was fascinated by the machinery that we could see from the outside. The next time we will tour the inside of the plant. We will both enjoy that. Kelvin deserves all the love that we can give him."

Mar, 2010: Phil says "Sure enough, Kevin and I got to tour the inside of the tea factory this time. I don't know who enjoyed it more. I do know it was a special time and Kelvin wasted no time in telling Mom what he saw. Kelvin is growing his English vocabulary and is now translating what I say to the boys. I have to be careful what I say around him because he now understands most of it. Mom says he is a wonderful, responsible big brother."
